Cape York Peninsula was the first part of Australia to be discovered, the first recorded landing of Europeans occurring in 1606. It is ironical, then, that this should be Australia’s last pioneering frontier. It was the last to be explored, and the last to be settled. It is a wild unpeopled region today, little changed in most parts since the days of the explorers. To travel overland to Cape York is still an adventure. The people who live in and love this neglected land, still have the spirit of the pioneers, battling isolation and largely forgotten by the rest of Australia. This book tells of these people, and of the hardy cattlemen and prospectors in the exciting past of this, the “Cape York Wilderness.”
